Project Description

Sharma is a well-known and well-respected old hand in the area of both direct and indirect taxation. With a practice spanning both contentious and non-contentious matters, Sharma has advised and acted for clients in both international taxation and domestic tax matters whether on corporate income tax, goods and services tax, property tax, stamp duties or other taxes and levies. Representing clients in difficult cases with the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS), where he started his tax career following law studies sponsored by the Public Service Commission, is familiar ground, including tax appeals all the way to the Court of Appeal if necessary. His tax litigation experience extends to non-appealable withholding taxes, interpretation of tax treaties and exchange of information requests from foreign tax authorities involving clients’ confidential banking records. Apart from the civil side of tax on issues involving tax assessments, tax incentives or enforcement, Sharma has a keen interest in resolving contentious issues faced by clients under tax audits and tax investigations for potential tax crimes, where liberty may be at stake and private settlements are desired.

Sharma also has experience as legislative draftsman on tax and other fiscal matters at the Attorney-General’s Chambers, and in the Judiciary as District Judge deciding various cases. As a dispute resolution specialist, Sharma is active in alternative dispute resolution (ADR), particularly arbitration and mediation, where he sits on the panels of various arbitration and mediation bodies. On the academic front, Sharma has been adjunct faculty at Singapore Management University teaching revenue law, and at NUS Business School teaching business law and corporate law.
